About Kothagudem

Kothagudem is known as Black Gold City. It has the large reserves of coal. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has topped in coal production among all other coal mine areas of the State-owned companies.

Kothagudem city is situated in the Telangana district. It has the average elevation of 89 metres above sea level. Chhattisgarh is in the north, almost 120 km from Kothagudem. 11280 applications were received for GVMC. The 17 wards of Kothagudem have a population of 79819 people as per the census of 2011. The elections are held every five years.

Kothagudem is famous for its extreme temperatures crossing 48degree C in summers and dropping to a low of 10 degrees in winters.

Government and Politics in Kothagudem

Kothagudem was made into a municipality town in 1971. It is a first grade municipality with 33 election wards. The town of Kothagudem is made the district headquarters. All the districts were reorganised as earlier it was a part of Khammam district. The district has 24 mandals.The two revenue divisions are Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam The district shares boundaries with Bhoopalapalle, Mahabubabad, and the states of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Economy of Kothagudem

Kothagudem is famous for coal and has two underground coal mines and two open cast projects. Singareni Collieries Company Ltd produces highest amount of coal in all coal mines areas. In July 2016 the SCCL is known to have produced 5.94 tonnes of coal which is much above the monthly target of 5.26tonnes of coal. This is 113 percent growth rate in the coal mining industry.

Industries at Kothagudem

The other feather in the cap industry is the Paperboards and Speciality Papers division by ITC which is a leading name in the paper business. Rich Forest reserves are another advantage of Kothagudem district.

Location of Kothagudem

Located 270 km from Hyderabad, the town of Kothagudem is set amidst dense forests. It’s a tiny industrial town with a thermal power station. It can be considered as a good stopover as it has good landscape, picturesque dense forests and famous industries.Palwancha is another beautiful town near kothagudem.Coal Mines, Kinnersani project, Ram temple of Bhadrachalam, Thermal power station are the major tourists’ attraction of Kothagudem. Bhadrachalam is a key town of pilgrimage importance. The temple town is situated on the banks of Godavari River. The town shares its historical significance with Ramayana. The name Bhadrachalam is derived from the word Bhadragiri (The Abode of Bhadra, the child of Meru and Menaka). The famous temple at Bhadrachalam is home to Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. It is a popular belief that   their idols are Swayambhu -self-manifested ones.

The Kinnersani River is a tributary of River Godavari. The kinnersani Dam is constructed here and is a means of storage reservoir. The scenic beauty created by the beautiful river, dam and lush green landscape is panoramic. Many animals can be spotted in their natural habitat in Kinnersani Sanctuary as it is a haven of exotic wildlife.

Parnshala is another place of tourist interest in the district. It is believed that Sita was kept in this Parnshala by Ravana. The place unfolds this part of the story of Ramayana. Beautiful sculptures of Shri Ram, Sita Mata, Luxman and Ravana are seen here.

Tourism in Kothagudem

To reach Kothagudem you can a get a train to Dornakal Junction regularly which is 54 km away. Kothagudem does not have an airport. Nearest airport is Vijayawada Airport. This is 115 km away. The other nearest Airport is Rajahmundy, 136 km away. There are regular buses from other major cities of the country to Kothagudem.

Proposal for establishing a Greenfield airport at Kothagudem district is in process as the Telangana Government has asked the central government to undertake stages of project further. The Government has identified land of 1,600 acres at Punukuduchelka village in Kothagudem mandal, for this project.
The administration is very keen on a Greenfield airport in Kothagudem as almost 1000 employees of SCCL will be able to avail to this air service. Presence of so many industries in the district will generate the air traffic.

Since Kothagudem is an industrial town, there are many places to stay in all budgets. Hotel Lepakshi, Hotel Thatipalli and Hotel Sri Balaji are good options to stay. The lodges are available in all budgets for tourists.
